Assistive Foot-Operated Soldering Device
(HandiEase)
Product Development Project
Apr. 2025 - June. 2025

Evolving a design course project into my independent master's project, I developed a device to help people hand solder more efficiently with their feet. With observational studies, several stakeholder interviews, and preference tests, I was able to successfully make an electro-mechanical prototype. I also strategized how I would ultimately take this product to market.

Business Model and Financial Planning
In one of Northeastern's makerspace, I observed and studied how people became frustrated using helping hands to solder as they constantly readjusted the flexible arms and clips.

Observed Frustrated Soldering User
From observations, I sketched and master modeled via SolidWorks a string-based mechanism to open/close a clip to hold components. The mechanism was foot operated.
Early Sketch and CAD
I 3D printed and gather components, assembled them, and tested the open/close clip prototype. Overall, users said they liked the pedal operation; although, they wanted the clip to rotate about its axis.

Early Prototype and User Testing
Taking a step back and researching online, I discovered the rich market of electronics repair; I interviewed electronics repair specialists and hobbyists.

I organized my interview notes by user and then grouped commonalities.

Categorized Notes for Analysis

I compiled my findings into a sketched concept - a device that would allow users to hold components with dynamic clips or vise jaws.
My new flexible arms were designed to be adjustable but allow for clip rotation. Keeping with string-based mechanisms, I made it possible to open/close with a motor and pulley. A vise jaw was operated via a linear actuator.

Motors Operated via Arduino Uno
Master Modeled CAD Subassemblies
With an external motor shield and driver, I programed three motors and a linear actuator with an Arduino Uno. After assembly, I brought it to users, and they really loved it

Completed Prototype Assembly
Assuming I will take the product to market, I researched consumer electronics repair within the US and globally, and I devised a possible business model.
