FEA of a Blocked Bifurcating Artery

Stress Analysis Project

Mar. 2023 - Jun. 2023

As a means to gaining insight into real-world applications of stress analysis, in a team of three Northwestern engineers, we analyzed the effects of a blood clot on a Y-shaped artery. Using Ansys, we examined the stress and deformation around the cross-area and throughout the artery.

Model Artery with Blood Clot

Skills:

  • Modeling Static Structures in Ansys

  • Solidworks CAD

  • Analyzing Stress and Strain in Ansys

We examined the artery with and without a blood clot to study the increase in radial and normal stress. We concluded the stress increase with blockage matched our expectations; however, we did not have time to match our data with that of real-life.

Results of normal stress along a healthy artery and a blocked one
